War in Space-The Next Battlefield
The other day I watched CNN special report on War in Space ( The Next Battlefield). It was a scary documentary but it made be aware of the importance of the US Global Positioning System(GPS) in our Technological World today.
GPS was initially conceived to aid navigation and globally synchronized time. Today the system has a much more critical function. Telecom networks rely on GPS clocks to keep cell towers synchronized so calls can be passed between them. Many electrical power grids use the clocks in equipment that fine-tunes current flow in overloaded networks. The finance sector uses GPS-derived timing systems to timestamp ATM, credit card, and high-speed market transactions. Computer network synchronization, digital television and radio, Doppler radar weather reporting, seismic monitoring, even multi-camera sequencing for film production—GPS clocks have a hand in all.
If something happens to the US GPS satellite network, chaos and confusion would occur and life in the US will be in a stand still. Very scary indeed!
Here's the video that explain it all just in case you have not seen the CNN documentary.
A Comment from one of the viewers: This entire program gives the impression the threat against satellites is a recent phenomenon. Not true, the military knew about this decades (over 30 yrs) past. And now, the US is playing catch up. This may all be too little too late. The nation is in a very serious trouble.
